Dr. Arun Netravali
Former President of Bell Laboratories, Dr. Arun N. Netravali, was responsible for research and development across all of Lucent Technologies.
Dr. Netravali has led important research and development in high-definition television, switching and networking, image processing, computer graphics, facsimile and graphics communications, digital compression, signal processing and human interfaces to computers.
Prior to joining Bell Labs in 1972, Dr. Netravali worked on problems relating to filtering, guidance, and control for the space shuttle for NASA.
Dr. Netravali has authored more than 170 technical papers and co-authored three books. He holds more than 70 patents in the areas of computer networks, human interfaces to machines, picture processing, and digital television.
Dr. Netravali has received numerous awards, including the National Medal of Technology, the Padma Bhushan (national award in India), the Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the L.G. Abraham Award, the Donald Fink Award, the Japanese C&C Prize, and the Thomas A. Edison Patent Award.
Dr. Netravali received his bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India, and a master’s and Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston, Texas. He holds an honorary doctorate from the Ecole Polytechnique Federale in Lausanne, Switzerland.
